Website Wednesday: Math Playground Helps Students Review Math Facts in a Fun Way!

by Kristie Burk

Last spring, I was contacted by Marianne Montoro, a teacher at Pickering Valley Elementary School, about finding some fun, online math games for children that would help them with both speed and accuracy on their math facts.  After a little bit of research and some testing with students, we selected mathplayground.com as our favorite site.

Math Playground offers lots of free math games from addition and subtraction all the way up to pre-calculus. I have to admit that the games are fun; I played “Alien Addition,” a Space-Invaders-like addition game, for a little bit longer than may have been necessary!  The site may be a little confusing for younger students, so teachers might want to find the games that they want to use ahead of time.

Ms. Montoro says that she likes Math Playground for three important reasons:

  1. It’s a free site that doesn’t require students to login or to create accounts, which helps with COPPA compliance.
  2. There are a variety of colorful activities to keep the students interested
  3. There are opportunities to select options, such as changing the speed of the game or the range of facts.
